Apu Returns To ‘The Simpsons’ With New Voice Actor After 9 Years

Apu has finally spoken again on The Simpsons. The beloved Kwik-E-Mart owner broke his silence in Sunday’s Halloween episode, nearly a decade after original voice actor Hank Azaria stepped down from the role in 2017 following criticism that a non-Indian actor should not voice the character. Sunil Malhotra has taken over the role, with Janina Gavankar joining as Apu’s wife Manjula. “Bringing Apu back feels like a reclamation,” Malhotra wrote on Instagram. “It truly IS his homecoming.” The episode cleverly addressed Apu’s long absence through an I Know What You Did Last Summer parody, with Apu cast as a masked killer. The story ends as a dream, with Homer reassuring Apu that nobody in Springfield could ever truly forget him
