YouTuber Kane Parsons Breaks Box Office Records With ‘Backrooms’
Kane Parsons has achieved the largest opening weekend in A24’s history, earning over $81 million with his $10 million horror/thriller Backrooms. The 20-year-old filmmaker, who adapted his own viral YouTube series, becomes the youngest director ever to claim the top domestic box office position. Fellow YouTuber Curry Barker’s own horror/thriller Obsession also continues its strong performance, climbing to $26.4 million in its third weekend. It’s now Focus Features highest-grossing North American release, with global earnings reaching $148 million. The Mandalorian & Grogu dropped approximately 70% to third place with $24 million, accumulating $171 million worldwide against a $165 million budget. Michael finished fourth with $11.7 million, just ahead of Nate Bargatze’s debut film The Breadwinner in fifth place with $7.5 million.
