Quiet first quarter for Kamloops construction industry not unusual
KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops construction industry has had a relatively subdued first quarter of 2023, according to new statistics, but it’s not far off from historical averages.
In its latest report, the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division shows $9.7 million in permit activity in March. The year-to-date total for the first three months of the year is $26.6 million.
Last year’s first quarter was significantly busier. Kamloops saw $27.2 million in permit activity in March 2022 alone, for a first-quarter total of $61.8 million.
But 2022 was an aberration. The average first-quarter permit activity for 2016 to 2021 was $32.9 million. Both 2016 and 2017 saw lower first-quarter totals than 2023.
Back to 2023, there were just nine residential unit permits issued in March and 21 for the year-to-date. By this time in 2022, there were 93 residential unit permits approved by the City of Kamloops.
