Construction underway in Juniper for the 2023 Y-Dream Home
KAMLOOPS — It was a ribbon cutting ceremony fit for a construction site. No red ribbon or oversized scissors – in it’s place, a 2-by-4 and saw as the 2023 Y-Dream Home project was unveiled in Juniper. Some the the TRU students who will build the home were there to cut the lumber.
“To learn to actually put the walls up, the wall trusses, the joists and to really understand how a house actually goes together and not just a mock-up inside the university. That hands-on experience is very valuable that they will learn,” said Jere Lorenz, CHBA Central Interior President.
The million dollar view will cost one lucky entrant just $100 as for the 27th year, the training home will be awarded to the Y Dream Home Lottery winner.
“This is an example of the community at work. The people behind the project, in the homebuilders and all the sponsors. The community support it’s just outstanding,” said Colin Reid, YMCA-YWCA President.
Over the past quarter century, the lottery has served as the largest fundraiser of the year for the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA, allowing them to offer a variety of programs to the community.
“This is our largest fundraiser, it’s vital to everything we do. Without the support of all the ticket buyers and all the community sponsors. The Y would be a different organization if we didn’t have this,” added Reid.
The final design of the home is still being finalized by the various partners on the project.
Unlike previous years, the pros were called in to complete the foundation work due to the steep grade of the property, but the rest of the build will be completed by the trades students enrolled at TRU.
“[It’s] very exciting to be again part of something that is unique in the province, and not just the province but Canada where you can have a project like this go year after year and such a good turnout with sponsors and the partnership we have with the YMCA-YWCA and TRU,” said Lorenz.
More details on the house will be released throughout the build ahead of next spring’s lottery.
